It got its name from barley because of its shape as it could be said to look like a grain of barley, wheat or rice. Barley or manestra is used a lot in Greek, Italian and in general Mediterranean cuisine, as it is the basis for several very tasty dishes. It can be used both in the pot and in the oven. It is prepared from semolina, carrot, tomato and spinach.
